STUDY ON CHRONIC FOOD AND NUTRITION INSECURITY IN SAMANGAN PROVINCE

Welthungerhilfe (WHH), formerly known as German Agro Action (GAA), is a German based, non-profit making, non-aligned international non-government organization (NGO) that aspires to see a world without hunger and poverty. The activities of Welthungerhilfe in Afghanistan began back in 1980 – immediately after the former Soviet Union’s occupation – to provide emergency aid for refugees. In 1992, Welthungerhilfe further increased its emergency aid activities and services, as well as rehabilitation and reconstruction assistance.

Currently, WHH draws most of its funding from the German government as well as from donations of the German public, intending to reduce the level of poverty while improving the livelihoods for the most vulnerable population.

Since November 2015, North West Regional Office of Welthungerhilfe Afghanistan in Samangan in partnership with two partners, one National NGO (CHA – Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance) and one Intentional NGO (INGO) (PIN- People in Need) our Alliance 2015 Partner, are implementing a project for food insecure people in four districts (Aybak, Hazrat-i-Sultan, Dara-i-Suf Bala and Dara-i-Suf payin) of Samangan province.

The project aims are to improve the livelihoods of 75 rural communities through effective resource management and the creation of sustainable livelihoods. Each partner is responsible for implementing project activities in two districts, and WHH has the role of coordination between partners and project donor. Main instruments for the achievement of the objective are:

1) Promotion of resource-conserving agriculture;

2) Construction and rehabilitation of preventive measures as well as the introduction of resource-conserving techniques at the household level;

3) Establishment of an effective resource management system through the development of capacities in institutions and administrative structures at the local and provincial level; and

4) Establishment of different forums for regular exchange and the establishment of a coordination mechanism for the sustainable networking of all stakeholders.

Through these instruments, a contribution is made to the improvement of the resilience of the affected population groups and the sustainability of food and nutrition security in four selected districts of the Samangan province.
