Final Evaluation of Monitoring of Women Peace Security Project

The project aimed to reduce violence against women, foster participation of women in politics and decision making, support the role of women in the peace process, and improve gender relations in the security sector. The project supported initiatives by women to address challenges facing their security, violations of their rights and hampering their effective participation as capable and accountable citizens in the society. The project activities were planned based on evidence provided by research studies conducted in collaboration with provincial women networks. Activities also comprised of mobilisation and advocacy efforts at the local, national and international efforts to improve peace and security and status of Afghan women.

The focus of the MWPS project was due to the fact that active participation of women in assessing their situation, identifying and prioritizing their needs, and defining factors affecting their peace and security are key issues in conceptualizing, understanding and formulating solutions to their problems. This fits well with strategies and plans to implement important laws and legislations for women such as the Afghan National Action Plan for the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325. Women would benefit greatly from enhanced capacity to monitor their situation and develop evidence-based recommendations for change.
