Nutrition to prevent Child and Mother Mortality in Afghanistan

The report presents the findings of the final evaluation of ACF’s project on “Nutrition to prevent women and child morbidity and mortality in Afghanistan” from March 2017 to March 2021.  The ultimate objective of the project is to reduce malnutrition among boys and girls under 5 (U5) in targeted communities of Ghor province in Afghanistan through two intermediate results outcomes: 1) improved nutrition services in targeted health facilities and nutrition practices in targeted communities of Ghor province, particularly among women, and 2) improved water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) practices in target 15 health facilities and communities in five districts, namely, Chaghcharan, Dawlatyar, Dolayna, Shahrak and Lal wa Sarjangal in Ghor province. The project was co-funded by Action Contre La Faim (ACF) and Global Affairs Canada (GAC) with a total amount of C$ 4,393,000.00 of which C$4,200,000.00 (95.6 percent) was contributed by GAC with a minimum C$193,000.00 (4.4 percent) contributed by ACF in kind.

Specific objectives of the evaluation
  • Carry out an evaluation of the project performance using the DAC criteria or something similar used in the M&E sector.
  • Assess the appropriateness of the design and strategies used, its effectiveness and efficiency, and adaptation of the project management structures and monitoring mechanisms related to the results and impact achieved, considering different HQs and the country’s mission involved.
  • Assess key factors (internal and external) that have contributed to or hindered the achievement of results.
  • Examine how the approaches used may have enhanced or hindered the results.
  • Identify key lessons and good practices useful for similar projects in the same sector.
  • Provide findings, conclusions, recommendations for follow-up actions for a subsequent phase and future interventions, including conclusions that different stakeholder groups will develop based on their own recommendations and insights (including intended and unintended results)
